Amnesty warns of a decline in human rights worldwide and in Belgium
In its 2025 report, Amnesty International states that fundamental rights are deteriorating sharply in many regions of the world. The organization speaks of the emergence of a “new predatory world order” and says the situation is marked by a rise in violations of freedoms and by weaker protection for civilian populations.
According to Amnesty, several leaders bear significant responsibility for this development. The NGO specifically names Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, and Benjamin Netanyahu, whom it accuses of taking part in an offensive against human rights. The report presents this trend as an international phenomenon affecting conflicts, public freedoms, and respect for international law alike.
In Belgium as well, Amnesty expresses its concern. The organization denounces a persistent gap between the country’s official human rights commitments and their concrete implementation. It highlights in particular problems linked to carrying out these promises in certain sensitive areas, without seeing sufficient improvement.
This dual finding, at the global level and in Belgium, shows according to Amnesty that political rhetoric is not always followed by real action. The NGO is therefore calling on states to better respect their obligations and to take concrete measures to better protect fundamental rights.
