In the highlands of South Kivu, the ICRC warns of a very worrying humanitarian crisis
In the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the humanitarian situation remains very difficult in the highlands of South Kivu. After several months of fighting, the International Committee of the Red Cross, known as the ICRC, is speaking of a situation that is "very worrying" for the civilian populations of this region.
According to the ICRC, the clashes have severely disrupted daily life. Many people lack access to healthcare, food, and other essential services. Population displacement has also increased, as residents have had to leave their villages to seek safer areas.
The humanitarian organization recently obtained a rare humanitarian pause. This temporary halt in the fighting allowed it to reach certain areas affected by the violence. The ICRC was thus able to assess needs on the ground and provide aid to people affected by the conflict.
In this mountainous and hard-to-reach region, humanitarian operations remain complicated. Insecurity, the remoteness of some villages, and the consequences of the fighting make aid slower and more difficult to organize. Humanitarian organizations therefore stress the importance of safe and regular access in order to help civilians.
This humanitarian pause shows that intervention is possible, but needs remain significant. The ICRC continues to warn of the urgency of the situation in South Kivu and reminds us that civilian populations need protection and sustained assistance.
