From Brazil to Gaza, a day marked by justice, human rights, and African football
In Brazil, the Supreme Court suspended the implementation of a law that was supposed to reduce the prison sentence of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The decision was made by a judge on Saturday, May 9. This case is important in the country because it concerns a former head of state and has revived the debate on justice and equality before the law.
According to the available information, this law provided for a reduction in the sentence of the former far-right president. But with this suspension, the reduction cannot be applied for the moment. The case could therefore continue before the Brazilian courts in the coming days or weeks.
In another international case, two activists from the “Flotilla for Gaza” detained by Israel are to be released. They are a Spaniard and a Brazilian, members of the Global Sumud Flotilla. They had been in detention since their arrest on April 29 off the coast of the Gaza Strip.
This flotilla aims to draw attention to the situation in Gaza. The announcement of their upcoming release marks a new stage in this case. It comes after several days of detention and in a very sensitive context surrounding aid, security, and access to Palestinian territory.
Finally, in sports, USM Alger beat SC Zamalek 1-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup. The match was played on Saturday evening at the 5 July 1962 Stadium. The game was described as very intense, with a particularly wild ending.
Thanks to this victory, the Algerian club prevailed over the Egyptian team in an important duel in the competition. This success for USM Alger was achieved in a charged atmosphere and after a dramatic end to the match, marking one of the sporting moments of the day.
