Arrest of a Frenchman in Vienna after suspicion of repeated restaurant frauds
A luxury hotel in the heart of Vienna was the scene of a fraud incident on Monday evening, according to the newspaper **Heute**. A 35-year-old French man had a meal at the hotel's upscale restaurant but was unable to pay the bill at the end of his visit.
According to the details provided by his identity, the man asked the restaurant staff to charge the bill to one of the hotel room accounts, only to later reveal that this room was not assigned to him and that he had not stayed at the hotel at all. This discrepancy prompted one of the hotel staff to notify the police immediately after suspecting a fraud.
According to the newspaper, a patrol from the Vienna police, part of the Kärntnertorpassage police station, arrived, where officers found after an initial inspection that the man was not only trying to evade paying the bill, but that his behavior was part of a recurring pattern. His identity revealed that the information available to the police indicated that the same man had previously been suspected of committing several similar cases of fraud in restaurants recently.
Based on this data, the police suggested the presence of a 'habitual' element in committing these offenses, which is classified under Austrian law as fraud in a Gewerbsmäßigkeit manner, meaning committing fraud repeatedly with the aim of achieving ongoing benefit. Consequently, the French man was arrested at the scene and taken to the police station to continue the investigations.
The newspaper did not mention whether there were additional financial amounts related to previous incidents, nor has the police announced yet whether additional charges will be brought against him related to other cases. Investigations continue under the supervision of the public prosecutor in Vienna, while the police are reviewing hotel and restaurant records in the area to verify the possibility of similar incidents occurring.
