Economic Overview: Global Growth Slows as Stock Markets Seek Direction
The global economy is facing a period of slowdown. The OECD, a key organization for economic cooperation, expects global growth to decrease rather than accelerate in the coming period. This forecast is primarily due to economic developments in the United States, where activity is growing less rapidly than previously hoped.
Despite the somber reports from the OECD, European stock markets showed a positive picture around noon on Monday. Prices in Europe rose after strong economic figures from China were released. These good results from Asia created an optimistic mood among European investors, leading to higher prices on the markets.
In the United States, the stock market situation was less clear-cut. Initially, Wall Street seemed headed for a higher start to the trading day. Later, however, forecasts changed, and so-called futures pointed to a slightly lower opening. Investors in the American market thus seem to be hesitating about the right course at the start of the week.
Several economic reports also came out of the US pointing to a cooling down. The Empire State index, which measures industrial activity around New York, fell significantly in March. Additionally, it appeared that US retail sales in February rose less sharply than analysts had previously expected. Consumers thus seem to be somewhat more cautious with their spending.
Optimism is also declining in the US construction sector. Confidence among homebuilders in the United States fell further in March. Another figure regarding the US economy was exactly as expected: business inventories in January rose in line with economists' forecasts. This provides a stable picture of the inventories companies are currently holding.
Finally, there is movement in the market for precious metals and cryptocurrencies. The bank UBS expects the gold price to rise further, after it recently reached a record high of more than $3,000 per troy ounce. At the same time, analysts are looking at the cryptocurrency Ripple (XRP). This coin is at a critical point and must soon choose a direction, with investors waiting for a potential breakout.
