Mother in court after her child died inside the washing machine
A court in the state of Baden-Württemberg sentenced a 35-year-old woman from Albstadt to five and a half years in prison after her newborn baby died inside a washing machine. The regional court in Hechingen convicted the woman of involuntary manslaughter on Monday.
According to what the court found, the woman secretly gave birth to her child in the bathroom of her shared apartment at the end of March. She had hidden her pregnancy from everyone, including her partner. After the birth, she placed the newborn inside the washing machine with the dirty laundry and closed the door.
Tragically, her partner later turned on the washing machine without knowing that the child was inside. The newborn died from serious head injuries due to the drum's rotation. The court concluded that the woman was aware of the possibility of her partner turning on the washing machine but accepted that risk.
The prosecution stated that the woman, by concealing her pregnancy and placing the newborn in the washing machine, deliberately created a situation that led to the child's death. The court described her actions as a "serious failure of maternal responsibility."
This case has caused widespread shock in Germany, where many expressed their sadness and disbelief over the incident. The defense attorney did not deny the facts but claimed that her client was in a state of severe psychological distress after giving birth. However, the court found that this did not exempt her from responsibility and sentenced her to five and a half years in prison.
