"Anti-Muslim incitement": The Socialist Youth moves against the ÖVP party
A controversial post on social media published by the ÖVP (Austrian People's Party) has sparked a wide political crisis in Austria. The campaign was based on data from the Integrationsbarometer and claimed that two-thirds of the population finds coexistence with Muslims difficult. The post was accompanied by a slogan stating that 'integration is not an offer but a commitment,' which provoked a wave of sharp criticism from several political parties.
The SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria) and its affiliated organizations firmly rejected this campaign. Finance Minister Markus Hartmann publicly criticized the ÖVP, reminding that many Muslims in Austria, including refugees from Bosnia, have been living and working in the country for decades, paying taxes and contributing significantly to society. Hartmann apologized to them, affirming that this rhetoric does not reflect Austria's values.
Vienna's mayor, Michael Ludwig, was more severe in his stance. He warned that responsible politics should not place entire groups of people under collective suspicion. He accused the ÖVP party of deliberately inflaming conflicts, considering that this behavior threatens social cohesion and undermines trust in democracy.
For its part, the Socialist Youth (Sozialistische Jugend – Socialist Youth), a youth organization close to the SPÖ, escalated the confrontation by filing an official complaint against the ÖVP party and Integration Minister Claudia Plakolm. The head of the Socialist Youth in Austria, Larisa Zivkovic, stated that the campaign represents anti-Muslim incitement and has crossed a clear red line, emphasizing that this type of rhetoric has no place in Austrian society.
Zivkovic warned about the real consequences of such political rhetoric, referring to a recent shooting incident targeting a mosque in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich). She noted that these incidents show where hate speech and exclusion can lead when politically weaponized against entire groups.
