No one was with him: A man died in the hospital waiting room
A nurse in Upper Austria has described a disturbing incident in which a patient died unnoticed while waiting for treatment in a hospital waiting room. The case has intensified concerns about staff shortages and heavy workloads in hospitals.
The incident came to light during ongoing collective bargaining negotiations for non-medical staff at the Ordensspitäler Oberösterreich (Order Hospitals of Upper Austria). Employees have already held several strikes, with the trade union vida demanding reduced working hours and improved conditions, proposing a gradual reduction to a 37-hour workweek by 2028.
According to the nurse, the shift began with long waiting times of around two hours in the waiting area. She was responsible for many patients at once and had to repeatedly prioritize those in critical condition, while also assisting others with basic needs such as accompanying them to the restroom or responding to urgent problems.
When she eventually brought a bed into a room for a man who had been waiting about 90 minutes, she immediately sensed something was wrong. The nurse said the patient’s body felt unusually cold when she touched him, causing alarm and prompting an immediate medical check.
A doctor checked the patient’s neck for a pulse while the nurse checked his wrist, but there were no signs of life. When the blanket was lifted, it became clear that the man had already developed death marks, indicating that he had likely died some time earlier.
After confirming the death, hospital staff carefully placed the man properly in the bed, covered him respectfully, and closed his eyes. According to the nurse, it later became clear that the patient had probably died while waiting and that no one had noticed.
The nurse described the moment as deeply distressing. She said it was heartbreaking to realize that the patient had died quietly and alone due to long waiting times and limited staff availability.
For her, the most painful realization was that the man spent his final moments without anyone by his side. She said the tragedy highlights the extreme pressure hospital workers face and raises serious questions about staffing levels and patient care in the healthcare system.
