Cyberattack on hospitals in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim
The LUP clinics in the North German district of Ludwigslust-Parchim have fallen victim to a cyberattack. As the district administration announced, the hospitals' IT systems were attacked by unknown individuals. The clinic locations in Parchim and Hagenow are particularly affected, where digital operations are currently severely restricted.
After the attack was discovered, IT experts responded immediately. To prevent further spread of the malware, many systems were disconnected from the internet as a precaution. This means that digital patient records and internal communication via email are currently only available to a limited extent or not at all.
Despite the technical problems, medical care for patients remains guaranteed. The clinics emphasized that emergencies will continue to be treated. However, there may be delays for scheduled appointments or surgeries. Employees must now increasingly rely on manual methods, such as paper documentation.
Cybersecurity specialists and the relevant authorities have already begun investigating the incident. They are checking whether sensitive data was stolen and who is behind the attack. Such attacks on critical infrastructure, which includes hospitals, have become a growing threat in recent years.
It is still unclear how long it will take for all IT systems to be fully and securely functional again. The security of patient data is currently the top priority for those in charge. The district intends to inform the public regularly about new developments and the extent of the damage.
