The police are responding to a report of a bomb threat.
The police in the city of Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia closed Bismarckplatz in the city center on Wednesday after receiving information about a potential threat. Patrols quickly spread and closed the roads leading to the busy area, causing widespread disruption.
According to WDR reports, the threat targeted one of the Sparkasse branches (the savings bank), raising concerns about the possibility of an explosive device. Authorities have not confirmed the details yet, but they are taking the situation very seriously.
A police spokesperson said that several nearby buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure. A large number of officers were deployed to investigate the threat and secure the site. At this stage, no further information has been disclosed about the source of the threat or its credibility.
The closure caused significant traffic problems within the city. The main roads leading to Bismarckplatz were closed, resulting in severe congestion in the center. Public transport was also affected, and buses had to change their routes away from the square.
Authorities continue to comb the area and gather evidence, urging residents to avoid the city center until the situation is fully resolved.
