The government confirms that the increase in 2026 will be much higher than inflation!

German retirees have a good reason to celebrate: pensions are set to rise by a significant 3.73 percent on July 1, 2026. This increase was revealed in a draft of the new pension insurance report obtained by Reuters, where the increase will exceed the expected inflation rate of about two percent, making it one of the most generous adjustments in recent years.

Although the figure is still just an estimate, the actual increase will be confirmed in the spring of 2026 when all wage data becomes available. Pensions have already risen by 3.74 percent this year, providing significant relief to millions of retirees facing rising living costs.

The financial outlook for the German pension system appears to be stronger than expected. The current contribution rate of 18.6 percent is likely to remain stable until 2028, when it may be slightly raised to 19.8 percent. By 2030, it could rise to 20.1 percent, and it is expected to reach 21.2 percent by 2039, according to forecasts.

Labor Minister Barbel Bas sent the draft to other ministries on Friday, which includes plans to extend what is known as the 'safety net' that ensures pensions remain at no less than 48 percent of the average wage until 2031. This step aims to prevent pensions from declining compared to general wages — which is a major concern for the aging population in Germany.

Among other major changes, parents of children born before 1992 will benefit. Starting in 2027, they will be credited with three full years of child care in their pension instead of the current two and a half years. This adjustment will increase the retirement income for many mothers — as well as fathers — who took on the responsibility of caring for children during that period.

According to official estimates, these reforms will raise pension levels by about 1.9 percent by 2031 compared to the previous system. For more than 21 million retirees in Germany, these planned increases represent a strong signal of stability, despite critics' warnings that rising costs could burden future generations.
