Survey: Two-thirds of Germans fear the AfD party

After the recent German parliamentary elections, the AfD party has seen a significant rise in opinion polls, at times equaling or slightly surpassing the CDU/CSU party. For the first time, Alice Weidel's party has temporarily become the strongest political force at the federal level. However, no party stirs controversy and division in Germany like the AfD.

According to a survey conducted by the INSA Institute for the newspaper "Bild" between May 23 and 26, 2025, the AfD party received a support rate of 24.5%, compared to 26% for the Union party. The survey results showed that the maximum support rate that AfD could reach is 30.5%. In contrast, the CDU/CSU could theoretically reach 43%, and the SPD could reach 41%, indicating that the expansion margin for AfD is limited compared to other parties.

Despite the current electoral strength of the AfD, a wide segment of German citizens views it with concern. According to the "ARD-Deutschlandtrend" survey conducted by the Infratest dimap institute in May, 62% of participants stated that they fear the party, affirming the statement: "I fear that the AfD will destroy our democracy." In contrast, 35% said they do not share this fear. Additionally, 67% of survey participants see the AfD as a far-right party, while 27% reject this characterization.

In the context of growing concerns about the AfD's trends, European politician from the party, Peter Bistron, sparked a new wave of criticism after commenting on a horrific incident that occurred at Hamburg Central Station on May 26, stating that the "slaughter" in Europe "has begun long ago," calling for a "wake-up call." This type of statement reinforces accusations against the party of trying to incite panic and provoke fear of a civil war.
