Women’s Rights Take Center Stage: Massive International Women’s Day Actions Across the Netherlands

International Women’s Day 2026 is being marked across the Netherlands with marches, conferences, and cultural events in cities including Amsterdam, Den Haag (The Hague), Groningen, Alkmaar, and Rotterdam, highlighting women’s rights, gender equality, and empowerment.

In Amsterdam, a large Feminist March began at 1 p.m. on the Dam, where speakers addressed the crowd before the demonstration moved through the city center. Protesters marched along Rokin, Vijzelstraat, and Weteringschans before reaching the Museumplein, where the event was scheduled to conclude in the late afternoon.

The march was organized by a broad coalition of feminist organizations, including ActionAid Nederland, Amnesty International NL, Atria, Bureau Clara Wichmann, Dolle Mina, FNV, Hivos, MamaCash, Oxfam Novib, PAX, Stem op een Vrouw, WO=MEN, and WOMEN Inc. Activists emphasized that many gender equality challenges remain unresolved, even in the Netherlands.

At the same time, a major conference titled “Women Unite” was held at the Carré theater in Amsterdam. The event was co-hosted by Mayor فيمكه هالسما and Carré director مادلين فان دير زوان, bringing together speakers and participants to discuss the challenges women still face while celebrating progress and achievements.

International Women’s Day activities are taking place across the country throughout early March. Major highlights include the Haagse Vrouwendagen in Den Haag, the Feminist Festival in Wageningen, and the HER Film Festival, alongside numerous local workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and panel discussions in cities such as Tilburg, Nijmegen, Leiden, and Helmond.

The global observance of International Women’s Day has roots in early 20th-century activism. Early demonstrations focused on women’s voting rights and labor rights in Europe and the United States. In the Netherlands, feminist أليتا جاكوبس proposed an annual women’s day in 1901 to promote social reform and political equality, helping inspire later initiatives that led to today’s worldwide celebrations.
