Cyberattack on LUP Clinics: Hospitals in the Ludwigslust-Parchim District Affected
In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, there are currently major problems in medical care. The LUP clinics fell victim to a cyberattack. As the district administration announced, several locations of the clinic group are affected by this digital attack.
The hospitals in Hagenow, Ludwigslust, and Parchim are primarily affected. Unknown perpetrators attacked the clinics' IT systems, leading to massive disruptions in the digital workflow. Such attacks often aim to encrypt important data or block the entire operation.
Work in the affected clinics is severely restricted by the incident. Since many computer programs no longer work, employees have to perform many tasks manually, for example with pen and paper. Despite the technical difficulties, the clinic management emphasizes that patient care remains secured and emergencies are being treated.
IT security experts and police specialists are already on site. They are investigating the extent of the damage and trying to find out how the attackers were able to penetrate the network. Work is underway at full speed to restore the systems safely, but this process may take some time.
This incident shows once again how vulnerable important facilities such as hospitals are to cybercrime. In recent years, there have been repeated similar attacks on so-called critical infrastructure in Germany. The district has announced that it will inform the public regularly about new developments.
