A Somali man stabs a resident at a refugee center in Hernals.
A violent stabbing incident occurred late Saturday night inside an asylum centre in Wien-Hernals, leaving one resident injured and prompting a police investigation.
According to the Austrian Press Agency APA, a 31-year-old Somali man is suspected of attacking a 44-year-old resident with a knife following an argument inside the facility. The dispute reportedly escalated into physical violence between the two men.
Patrol units from the Vienna police were dispatched shortly after midnight and arrested the suspect at the scene. Investigators believe the assault was carried out with a kitchen knife with a blade measuring about 20 centimetres. The weapon was found at the location and seized as evidence.
The injured man suffered a stab wound to the chest. Emergency medical teams treated him at the scene before transferring him to hospital for further care. Authorities confirmed that his injuries are not life-threatening.
The suspect is now under investigation on suspicion of deliberately causing serious bodily harm. A restraining and entry ban has been issued against him, along with a temporary weapons prohibition. The Vienna police, LPD Wien, said inquiries are ongoing to clarify the circumstances that led to the confrontation inside the asylum centre.
