Germany records a 55% decrease in asylum applications as deportations rise

Germany announced a significant decrease in the number of asylum applications by 55% compared to last year, which the government described as a direct result of implementing stricter immigration policies and speeding up deportation procedures. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt considered these figures to represent one of the largest declines in recent years.

According to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge), the number of new asylum applications reached its lowest level last June, with only 6,860 applications recorded – a decrease of 59% compared to the same month in 2024. Overall, the number of asylum applications has decreased by 51% over the past three years, reflecting a clear shift in Germany's approach to immigration policy.

Minister Dobrinendt told Bild am Sonntag that recent reforms "have significantly reduced the incentives for illegal immigration to Germany," confirming that the government plans to accelerate the deportation of rejected asylum seekers. He added that the repatriation program will be expanded to include not only dangerous migrants or criminals but also those whose asylum applications have been rejected.

The German Ministry of the Interior has also begun reviewing asylum procedures for Syrian citizens as part of broader European discussions on coordinating deportation operations and controlling migration outside the European Union's borders. These steps aim to establish a common European approach to dealing with asylum and migration issues.

Other European countries such as Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands are witnessing a similar trend to Germany's policies by tightening immigration controls. European officials say these measures reflect a growing desire to achieve a balance between border security and humanitarian commitments, at a time when the continent continues to face escalating challenges related to immigration and asylum.
