Knife attack in Hamburg, 12 injured, 3 of them in critical condition
This evening, a knife attack occurred at the main train station in Hamburg, resulting in twelve people being injured, including three in critical condition. Emergency teams described the situation at the scene as extremely chaotic, as fire and rescue services carried out an extensive rescue operation on site.
According to a spokesperson for the rescue teams speaking to the German NDR channel, the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. Some of the wounded were treated on-site inside the trains themselves.
The attack occurred around six o'clock in the evening at platform 13/14 at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, one of the busiest transportation hubs in Germany, especially during peak hours on Friday evening. Eyewitnesses reported that the area around Steintordamm near the station looked like a field hospital due to the high number of injured and rescuers.
The police confirmed via platform X that they have arrested a person suspected of carrying out the attack, but they have not yet revealed his identity or motives. Authorities also closed some roads leading to the station, while a state of concern and confusion prevailed among citizens at the site without turning into a state of complete panic.
It is noted that the authorities in Hamburg had imposed a ban on carrying weapons in the vicinity of the station since October 1, 2023, and in December 2024, this ban was expanded to include carrying knives on public transport.
