Vienna plans to invest one billion euros in climate protection in 2026
The city of Vienna plans to allocate around one billion euros from its budget for climate protection in 2026, despite facing a significant financial deficit. The city's climate advisor, Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ), confirmed that the capital must prioritize climate initiatives while ensuring social compatibility in all measures.
Climate protection remains a key focus in Vienna, with ongoing projects and the implementation of new projects to reshape the city's green infrastructure. By mid-2027, the city's parks will see significant updates covering 240,000 square meters of green spaces, enhancing aesthetics and environmental value.
The main projects include the rehabilitation of the former transfer square in Breitenlee, along with the expansion of the Viennese forests in urban areas. In addition, 78.6 million euros will be allocated for the maintenance and renewal of the city's pipeline network to ensure the quality of drinking water.
As Vienna expands its solar energy initiatives, 90,000 households are now benefiting from clean electricity. At the same time, the city's swimming pools will remain affordable, with plans to build a new indoor pool at Höpflerbad and renovate existing facilities to ensure entertainment is available for residents during the summer.
The city's sustainability commitments extend to waste management through the new circular economy strategy, which aims to transform Vienna into a waste-free city. With 33 targeted measures, the plan focuses on resource conservation and waste reduction. The climate law passed this year enhances the city's long-term adaptation to climate change and directs the implementation of the five-year climate roadmap starting in 2026.
