KBV warns of software errors in medication dosing

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has issued an urgent warning to medical practices in Germany. There are technical problems with the software that manages patient data. These errors can lead to information about medication dosages being stored incorrectly in the system.

The problem occurs when the so-called "standardized national medication plan" is imported into the practice software. This plan is an important document for patients who need to take multiple medications. It is actually intended to ensure greater safety, but technical transmission errors are now causing uncertainty.

Due to the software errors, medication quantities are often not transferred correctly. This means that the doctor's computer could show a different dosage than the patient's paper plan. If a doctor then issues a new prescription, there is a risk that the dosage will be incorrect.

The KBV advises all doctors to check the data carefully after it has been imported. At the moment, one should not rely blindly on the technology. The affected software, the Practice Management System (PVS), is used in almost every practice, which is why many medical professionals must be informed about the problem.

Experts are already working to find and fix the technical causes of these errors. Until a solution is found, special caution is important. Patients should speak directly with their doctor or pharmacist if they are uncertain about their medication to avoid health risks.
