Massive strikes of buses and trams paralyze daily life in all states

A wave of public transport strikes has severely disrupted daily life across several German states, leaving commuters struggling to find alternatives as buses and trams remain out of service in multiple regions.

The labor union Verdi reported that areas such as Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia (Noordrijn-Westfalen), and Saxony-Anhalt (Saksen-Anhalt) have been particularly affected. In the Bavarian capital Munich (München), buses and trams have remained parked in depots, worsening the disruption.

In North Rhine-Westphalia (Noordrijn-Westfalen), this marks the second transport strike in the same week, with additional tram strikes planned in some areas on Friday. Meanwhile, in Saxony-Anhalt (Saksen-Anhalt), industrial action is expected to continue through Sunday, extending the travel difficulties for residents.

Despite the widespread disruptions, regional and suburban train services operated by Deutsche Bahn have continued running and remain unaffected, offering limited relief to commuters relying on alternative travel options.

The strikes are part of ongoing collective bargaining negotiations across Germany’s public transport sector. While agreements have already been reached in Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein, discussions continue elsewhere. In Hesse (Hessen), which includes the financial hub Frankfurt, a compromise deal has been reached and is now awaiting approval from union members.

Negotiations are also ongoing in Berlin, where a new round of talks has begun with the city’s main public transport operator. According to Verdi’s deputy chair, Christine Behle, many regions are still in the early stages of negotiations despite the dispute entering its fourth month, with key disagreements focusing on working conditions such as hours, break times, and rest periods between shifts.
