Dismantling a gang in Rotterdam that runs a massive fraud operation through fake charities
The police in Rotterdam arrested three young men, aged 17, 20, and 22, on suspicion of running a large-scale scheme involving fake charities that stole hundreds of thousands of euros. The suspects face charges of fraud and money laundering.
According to investigators, the three organized a network of collectors, many of whom were minors, to raise donations from people. The police confirmed that these minors may also face criminal liability as the investigation into this operation continues.
The fake fundraisers concentrated near supermarkets and public transport stations, where they approached passersby using flyers and badges promoting non-existent charities. Donors were asked to pay in cash or via payment cards. However, the money was transferred directly to the personal accounts of the suspects instead of any charity. The police confirmed that the stolen funds have not been found.
According to the authorities, collectors were allowed to keep a large portion of every 100 euros collected, and they even received bonuses for collecting larger amounts. In some cases, donors later discovered that higher amounts had been deducted than what they had agreed to pay.
The investigation began after a community police officer recognized some of the collectors. The police carried out raids on the homes of the suspects and in a building on Vijverhofstraat in Rotterdam, where they seized donation boxes, payment devices, and financial records. The three suspects remain in custody for further investigation, and the police have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests.
