There is no increase in migration: Germany is closely monitoring the repercussions of the war in Iran

Germany’s Interior Minister says the ongoing Iran conflict has not yet triggered increased migration toward Europe, despite millions being displaced in the region.

Alexander Dobrindt stated that authorities are not currently observing rising migration pressure toward Europe following the US-Israeli war on Iran. However, he emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored as conditions in the Middle East continue to evolve.

According to Dobrindt, migration trends within Iran and Lebanon show significant internal displacement, but there are no clear signs yet of people moving toward Europe. He explained that pressure at the Turkish border would be an early indicator of a broader migration wave, which has not been detected so far.

Data from the World Health Organization indicates that more than 4.25 million people were internally displaced in both countries between late February and early April due to the conflict. Despite this large-scale displacement, movement has largely remained within national borders.

Dobrindt warned that the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether migration patterns shift, particularly depending on how the conflict develops across the Middle East. European authorities remain on alert and are preparing for potential changes.

He also signaled that Germany could extend its border controls beyond September if necessary. These controls, introduced after he took office, include stricter checks and refusals of entry at the country’s external borders, in line with temporary provisions under EU Schengen rules.

Germany has already extended these measures twice, reflecting a tougher stance on migration as the government prepares for possible future pressures.
