Arrests in Amsterdam due to the burning of the banned Christmas tree
Several people were arrested in the Floradorp neighborhood of Amsterdam-North after protests erupted against the ban on traditional Christmas tree fires in the area. Police were called in to control the disturbances and intervene to address the recurring events.
The disturbances began on Saturday night when the police responded to a series of fires and fireworks being thrown by young people. The chaos continued until Sunday, necessitating additional security intervention.
The youth also set fire to waste containers, destroyed surveillance cameras, police trucks, and even portable toilets. Authorities described the situation as a danger to residents and law enforcement teams.
The mayor of Mecca, Halsa, had banned the annual fire earlier this year based on the advice of the fire service, citing risks to residents and environmental damage. Despite the ban, some residents attempted to continue the tradition.
So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the fires and acts of vandalism. The police continue to monitor the area to prevent further incidents and maintain public safety.
