Call to ban powerful motors in E-Bikes
The German Bicycle Industry Association (Zweirad-Industrie-Verband - ZIV) has issued a warning regarding the increasing use of electric bicycles with powerful motors, calling for a ban on those exceeding 250 watts. This comes amid growing safety concerns, especially with the rise in accidents related to fast electric bicycles.
The union points out that these motors make bicycles go at high speeds, posing a real danger on city streets and bike paths. The original idea behind electric bikes – being a safe and environmentally friendly mode of transport – is being undermined by this trend towards high performance.
The union sees that the number of accidents clearly increases with the increase in motor power, especially as many users misjudge the speed and weight of electric bikes. The elderly and children are considered to be among the most at-risk groups, as they are often surprised by bikes traveling at high speeds on designated paths.
Therefore, the union calls for the enactment of a law prohibiting motors exceeding 250 watts to ensure the safety of road users and bike paths. It also warns that introducing more powerful models could blur the legal definition of an electric bicycle, which is supposed to rely partially on physical effort.
In this context, the Union supports the current European rules that set a maximum electric support speed of 25 km/h. It also proposes additional conditions such as support ratios of 1:4 and 1:6 (with a maximum of 15 km/h), a maximum support power of 750 watts, and a maximum total weight of 250 kg for single-wheeled bicycles and 300 kg for multi-wheeled ones.
Pedelec bicycles, which provide electric support of up to 250 watts and a maximum speed of 25 km/h, will not be affected by these demands. On the other hand, S-Pedelec bicycles, which can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h, require a driving license and insurance and are often not allowed to use bike paths.
Companies like Bosch clearly reject any illegal modifications or increases in performance to ensure compliance with regulations, but no official responses have yet been issued by manufacturers regarding ZIV's demands. It is worth noting that some categories, such as off-road bicycle users or those transporting heavy loads, may require more powerful engines.
When purchasing an electric bike, consumers are advised to choose the appropriate type according to usage, whether for commuting within cities, for long trips, or for mountain use. It is preferable to choose a bike with a comfortable frame, a battery with suitable capacity, and a motor that matches the driving style and distance.
Hydraulic braking systems provide additional safety, and the test ride before purchase allows for ensuring the bike's suitability. Additionally, the availability of maintenance and spare parts from the dealer is an important factor in ensuring quick service in case of malfunctions.
