€50 Fine for Loud Calls and Eating on Vienna Public Transport
Vienna’s public transport operator Wiener Linien is launching a new campaign to enforce greater consideration among passengers. Those who ignore the house rules — including talking loudly on the phone or eating on the subway — now risk a fine of €50.
Starting in March, Wiener Linien will roll out an awareness campaign targeting noise and disruptive behavior across the network. Security personnel will increase inspections and intervene when necessary. While staff will initially remind passengers of the rules, repeated or serious violations can lead to financial penalties.
The Grundlage for the stricter enforcement is the official Hausordnung (house rules) of Wiener Linien. The regulations clearly prohibit behavior that persistently disturbs other passengers or shows disrespect. This includes loud phone calls, playing music, or watching videos without headphones.
Eating on the U-Bahn (subway) is also forbidden. In addition, smoking, consuming alcohol, begging, selling goods, standing or kneeling on seats, and visibly carrying weapons are banned. Dogs must be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle. Actions that disrupt operations or endanger other passengers are strictly prohibited.
Anyone caught violating the rules faces a €50 fine, though more serious cases may result in higher charges, especially if property damage occurs. Wiener Linien says the goal is not punishment, but ensuring a more pleasant and respectful environment for everyone using Vienna’s public transport system.
