Millions of retirees will receive double payments at the end of October
About three million retirees in Austria are preparing to receive a welcome financial payment at the end of October. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, retirees will receive double payments this month, a tradition that is applied every year in April and October. These "double pensions" serve as a special bonus for retirees, similar to what employees receive as an extra salary in the summer and winter.
The ministry confirmed that the October payment for this year will arrive earlier than usual, as November 1 falls on a Saturday, which is also a public holiday. Therefore, the double pension will be transferred to accounts on October 31, 2025. After that, regular payments will resume according to the specified schedule — with the November pension being transferred on December 1, and the December pension on December 31.
The double payment is automatically transferred by the government, and retirees do not need to take any action to receive it. The final amount depends on the monthly pension value for each person. For example, someone receiving a monthly pension of 1,400 euros will receive about 2,553 euros net in October, while someone receiving 3,000 euros monthly will get around 5,026 euros. Those whose pensions reach 5,000 euros monthly will receive approximately 7,939 euros.
Although this news represents a pleasant surprise for many retirees, it comes after months of controversy over government austerity measures that have affected them. Health insurance contributions have risen from 5.1% to 6%, which costs many retirees hundreds of euros annually.
The planned adjustments to pensions for the coming year mean that about a third of the elderly in Austria will not receive full compensation for inflation. However, the double payment in October will provide temporary financial relief for millions of families across the country, just in time before the upcoming winter season.
