No more passport stamps: Germany fully adopts the digital system starting in October

Starting from October 12, passport stamps will disappear in Germany, marking a significant shift in how travelers cross borders. The new European Entry/Exit System (EES) will be officially launched, starting at Düsseldorf Airport, before extending to Frankfurt am Main and Munich, and then to all German airports and ports. Instead of traditional ink stamps, travelers' information will be recorded electronically.

For German citizens, this means that their passports will no longer be stamped at border checkpoints, as their journeys will be documented digitally. This step comes after recent changes to the photo requirements for identity cards and passports, making the travel process more digital.

The biggest change will affect citizens of countries outside the European Union. Upon entering the Schengen Area, they will be required to provide fingerprints and a facial scan. This biometric data, along with their personal information and travel documents, will be stored in the system. The aim is to make frequent border crossings faster and more secure.

The EES system will be implemented in 30 European countries, including all EU member states except Ireland and Cyprus, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Travelers to these destinations will start experiencing the new digital procedures starting mid-October.

Authorities expect the system to provide significant benefits. Border checks are expected to become faster and more efficient thanks to pre-stored data. The level of security will also increase, as digital records will help detect overstays, monitor unauthorized entries, and identify potential security threats. With full implementation mandatory by April 2026, the EES system marks the beginning of a new digital era in European travel.
