Dutchman may face death penalty in Indonesia for smuggling ecstasy
Indonesian authorities have arrested a Dutch citizen on charges of involvement in an international drug trafficking operation, local media reported on Saturday.
The suspect, referred to by the initials of his name "LT", is accused of attempting to smuggle approximately 1200 ecstasy pills to the tourist island of Bali, with the pills hidden inside candy boxes and a Superman costume.
A German citizen, said to be the supplier of these drugs, has also been arrested. The pills were discovered by customs officials inside packages from UPS coming from Germany. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet confirmed the news of the arrest.
According to a report by RTL Nieuws, the Dutch suspect may face the death penalty, although the sentence is often commuted to life imprisonment. No death sentences have been carried out against foreigners in Indonesia since 2016, although around 100 people remain on death row.
