A Siberian cold wave brings the risk of frostbite, freezing pipes, and snowfall in Germany.
Germany is entering a severe cold wave, with temperatures expected to drop to -15 degrees in the Ore Mountains and -10 degrees around Berlin, while the icy eastern winds make it feel like -30.
Meteorologists have warned that the stormy eastern winds, although not strong, will significantly lower the feeling of cold. Daytime temperatures in the east may reach around -5 degrees, but nights will remain dangerously cold across the country.
Severe cold brings four main risks. Frostbite is a real danger to exposed skin, especially when temperatures feel like -30. Pipes can also freeze and burst, causing material damage. There is a risk on roads where moisture seeps into cracks and freezes, leading to asphalt explosions and the formation of potholes.
In addition, the shores of the Baltic Sea may witness snowfall due to the lake effect, as cold air passes over warm waters and gains moisture, resulting in heavy snowfall. Snow accumulation of up to 10 centimeters or more is possible in the affected areas.
Meteorologists expect this cold wave to continue until mid-February, with ongoing risks of frost, ice, and snowfall. Authorities urge residents to take necessary precautions against the prolonged severe cold and its associated dangers.
