Women's organizations sue Geert Wilders over controversial tweet
Two prominent women's rights organizations, Bureau Clara Wichmann (BCW) and WOMEN Inc., filed a formal complaint against the leader of the Freedom Party (PVV), Geert Wilders, due to a tweet he posted on August 4. The tweet included a split image: on the left side, a young blonde woman holding a "PVV" label, and on the right side, an older woman wearing a hijab with an angry expression and a "PvdA" label. Wilders accompanied the image with the phrase: "the choice is yours on 29/10," referring to the upcoming elections.
The organizations believe that the image goes beyond the limits of political discourse and constitutes incitement to hatred, discrimination, and collective insult. They also considered that it discriminates against women based on gender, religion, racial origin, age, and political affiliation. They emphasized that the filing of the complaint was to protect the collective rights of women in the Netherlands.
This was not the first time the tweet has sparked widespread criticism. Fourteen Muslim organizations, along with the National Discrimination Authority Discriminatie.nl, filed similar complaints accusing Wilders of inciting hatred and fueling stereotypes against Muslims and deepening social division.
The reactions were strong, as many critics likened the tweet to Nazi propaganda during World War II. Discriminatie.nl also announced that it received more than 12,500 individual reports against the tweet, the highest number ever recorded in a single case.
Despite this storm, recent opinion polls indicate that the Freedom Party (PVV) led by Wilders is gaining strength. It is expected to receive around 20% of the votes, which translates to about 30 seats in the Dutch parliament, making it the largest party ahead of GroenLinks-PvdA at 15% and the VVD party at 10%. These figures reflect the deep division in the Dutch political landscape as the election date approaches.
