Mixed signals for the global economy and financial markets
The OECD, a major international organization, has issued a warning about the global economy. According to their latest report, global growth is likely to slow down rather than accelerate. This is primarily due to the economic situation in the United States, which has a significant impact on the rest of the world.
Despite this somber message, European stock markets showed a positive trend around noon. Prices rose after strong economic data from China was released. These positive reports from Asia gave European investors some renewed courage at the start of the week.
In the United States itself, the situation on the stock market was less clear. Predictions for the opening of Wall Street fluctuated throughout the day. While markets initially seemed headed for a higher start, later figures pointed to a slightly lower opening for the American stock exchanges.
Various economic reports from the US caused this uncertainty. For instance, US retail sales rose less sharply in February than experts had expected. Additionally, there was bad news about the manufacturing industry in the New York region; the so-called Empire State index fell significantly in March.
The US housing market is also struggling. Confidence among homebuilders in the US fell further in March. A small bright spot was that business inventories in the United States rose in January. This increase was exactly as analysts had previously predicted.
Outside the stock market, there is much attention on gold. The gold price recently reached a record high of more than $3,000 per troy ounce. The bank UBS expects that this rise is not yet over and that the price of the precious metal could grow further in the near future.
Finally, investors are looking at the crypto market, where the coin Ripple (XRP) is at a significant point. The market for digital currencies remains full of risks and opportunities. Experts are wondering whether Ripple will soon make a major leap upward or if the price will choose a different direction.
