Dutch lawmakers are racing against time to pass stricter asylum laws

Dutch lawmakers are racing this week to finalize a bill that tightens asylum laws before the Christmas deadline set by Foreign Minister David van Wil, amid disagreements over key details such as criminalizing illegal residency.

A modification by the far-right PVV party, which would make providing humanitarian aid to illegal residents a crime, has sparked widespread controversy. Van Wil reassured Parliament that simple acts of assistance, such as providing a plate of food, would not be subject to legal prosecution.

The Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) withdrew its support for the bill last July due to an amendment by the PVV, while the smaller ChristenUnie party also called for its removal. Negotiations among the parties involved in forming the coalition, including the CDA, remain divided over the project.

CDA deputy Bart van den Brink proposed a compromise that protects those who assist refugees from legal prosecution, while the progressive liberal D66 party opposes the entire project. The right-wing liberal VVD party, to which Van Wil belongs, supports stricter measures and accuses other parties of delaying progress.

PVV leader Geert Wilders insists on not softening the bill further, but the party is willing to abandon the ban on assisting refugees to focus on enforcing illegal residence laws. Critics, including legal experts and The Hague police chief Karen Croes, warn that criminalizing illegal residence could create a 'revolving door' problem without actually improving the repatriation of migrants to their home countries.
