800,000 visitors expected at the New Year's Eve event in Vienna with strict security measures

Vienna is preparing to welcome around 800,000 visitors during the New Year's Eve celebrations, one of the largest open events in Europe, with enhanced security and organizational measures to ensure the safety of participants and the smooth running of the celebrations.

The New Year's Eve route in Vienna has been an annual tradition for over three decades, attracting hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists to the city center. With this large expected number, the city has put in place a comprehensive security plan that includes more than 500 security personnel, as well as pre-emptive barriers, a video surveillance system, and a joint operations room that includes all relevant parties.

Just before the event, Vienna's mayor Michael Ludwig visited the main control center for the route, where operations are managed in coordination with the police, fire department, ambulance services, official authorities, and organizers. This mechanism aims to make quick decisions in case the squares become full or any security emergency occurs.

The cameras deployed in the celebration area are a key element of the safety plan, as they allow for monitoring visitor movement and directing human flows away from crowded points. Immediate instructions can also be directed to visitors via the public address system and information screens located in sensitive areas.

Security measures include the establishment of about 40 checkpoints to prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering, in addition to a clear identification of the entrances to the route and exhibition areas. Bag checks are conducted at entry points, with a ban on bringing in fireworks, glass, large items, vehicles, and sports equipment to ensure public safety.

The organizing authorities recommend that visitors use public transport or walk, as some metro and tram lines will be modified during New Year's Eve. Continuous updates will also be published on the official New Year's route website and its digital channels.

This year's program has a special character related to the year of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, featuring a musical show titled 'The Best of Eurovision' at Rathausplatz, along with the official countdown at midnight. As in previous years, the city has decided to forgo fireworks in respect for the environment, animals, and the safety of residents.
