Berlin hospital warns of an increase in severe injuries during winter

Berlin’s Charité hospital has issued a warning about a sharp rise in serious injuries caused by icy winter conditions. Doctors say many patients now require surgery, prompting the hospital to use extra staff and resources.

In a message shared on social media, the hospital reported that the most frequent injuries include broken arms, shoulder injuries, ankle fractures, and hip fractures. Older people are particularly affected, with many also suffering head injuries after slipping on ice.

The alert comes during a prolonged cold spell across northern Germany, where freezing temperatures and black ice have made pavements and roads extremely dangerous. Hospitals in the capital say the situation has placed heavy pressure on emergency departments.

The injuries have intensified a debate over whether salt should be used to de-ice pavements. Berlin normally bans salt because of environmental damage to plants and concrete. However, authorities temporarily lifted the ban due to the increased risk to pedestrians.

Berlin Mayor كاي فيغنر warned of extreme weather with freezing rain and ongoing frost. Transport minister أوته بونده confirmed the decision to allow salt use, while Hamburg official أنييس تشاركس said the goal was to protect vulnerable residents, especially older people and those with limited mobility.
