Closure of schools in Beverwijk and Heemskerk due to escalating conflict among youth
Five secondary schools in Beverwijk and Heemskerk were closed on Friday amid fears of escalating violence among local youth. Videos showing fights, threats, and troubling behavior circulated on social media, raising concerns among students and parents, according to reports from Noordhollands Dagblad and NH Nieuws.
The affected schools include Skills Pre-Vocational Secondary School, Castor College, Dalí College, Forta, and Fourteens. Videos circulating online show a boy kicking a head lying on the ground, with its mouth covered and pants raised, and this clip has been presented as a "victory." AI-generated videos showing explosions in schools have also circulated, heightening fears.
Parents and students warned each other against going to school on Friday, fearing gunfire and attacks. Local sports clubs issued warnings to young members not to go out alone in the evening. The DEM football club wrote: "According to our information, members of surrounding clubs have been harmed. Let us not be afraid, but remain vigilant to situations."
In response to these disturbances, the municipalities of Beverwijk and Heemskerk issued emergency ordinances prohibiting gatherings and wearing clothing that covers the face. These measures aim to prevent the possibility of possessing or misusing firearms, according to the official statement from the municipality of Beverwijk on platform X.
After consulting with schools and the police, the authorities decided to keep all five schools closed on Friday as a precautionary measure. These closures and security measures aim to protect students and maintain order while the authorities closely monitor the situation.
