The Netherlands spends nearly one billion euros on digital transformation

The cost of the Digital Strategy in the Netherlands (NDS) is estimated at around 950 million euros, according to an initial government assessment. However, officials warn that this figure is uncertain and funding has not yet been secured, leaving the final cost of the plan open.

The outgoing Minister for Digital Affairs, Eddy van Marum (BBB), shared the preliminary estimate in a status report he submitted to the Tweede Kamer. This estimate includes the largest financial projects within the six priorities of the NDS and four interventions, excluding the costs of addressing legacy IT systems.

Van Marum explained that until a detailed investment schedule is completed, NDS will continue to use current resources. The full schedule, expected in the second quarter of 2026, is expected to clarify funding, implementation plans, and project priorities across ministries, local governments, and public service providers.

The preliminary plan has been prepared in consultation with various stakeholders, including municipalities and the National Public Service Providers Network (NPD). Van Marum confirmed that the announced figures are provisional estimates, and that political decisions will significantly impact the final cost.

The NDS, launched in July, aims to enhance the digital infrastructure in the Netherlands through cooperation between the national government, local authorities, and public service organizations. Among its initiatives, the 'Citizen and Business First' task force is working with around forty municipalities to create unified government portals for services.
