Relief Deal: Government Workers to Receive Salary Increase and Bonus Payments

The Dutch government and unions have reached a provisional agreement to raise wages for civil servants, ending months of strikes that disrupted key public services across the country.

Under the deal, around 160,000 employees of the central government will receive a 2.7% salary increase starting July 1, retroactively applied from January 1. This marks a shift from the previous pay freeze imposed by the earlier cabinet.

In addition to the pay rise, lower-paid workers will receive a one-off payment of €1,400, while those in higher salary brackets will receive €1,000. The agreement is set to run for one year, lasting until the end of 2026.

Unions including FNV, CNV, and other civil service organizations described the outcome as a breakthrough, though they noted it falls short of their initial demands. Members will vote on the proposal within three weeks, and approval will make the deal official.

The agreement follows significant industrial action, including a strike on April 14 involving more than 6,000 workers. The protests caused disruptions at institutions such as the Belastingdienst (tax office), Douane (customs), and DUO (student finance agency), and even forced parliament to cancel scheduled debates.

Interior minister بيتر هيرما reopened negotiations shortly after the strikes escalated, despite earlier stating he was bound by political support for maintaining the pay freeze. His renewed efforts ultimately led to the current compromise.

However, broader tensions between unions and the government remain unresolved. Disputes over plans to increase the pensioenleeftijd (retirement age) and reduce werkloosheidsuitkeringen (unemployment benefits) continue, with unions warning that further industrial action could follow.
