Diplomatic crisis with Iran after the confiscation of a Dutch diplomat's belongings

The Netherlands is facing a diplomatic dispute with Iran after the luggage of a Dutch diplomat was seized at Tehran airport. The Dutch government says the action violated international law and has demanded an explanation from Iranian authorities.

According to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken – Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the incident happened on January 28 at Imam Khomeini International Airport. A Dutch diplomat was stopped by Iranian officials and his diplomatic baggage was confiscated. The Netherlands raised the issue through diplomatic channels but received no response for weeks.

The situation escalated after footage of the incident appeared in Iranian media this week. Following the leak, the Dutch government summoned the Iranian ambassador in The Hague. The ministry said it regretted the release of the images and stressed that the silence from Tehran had now been broken.

Iranian media claimed that the diplomat, identified as أندريه فان فيغن, was carrying satellite communication equipment and refused to have his luggage scanned. Reports said the suitcase contained a Starlink modem and several satellite phones. Iranian authorities argue such devices are banned because they can be used to spread information outside state control.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry rejected these claims, saying Iran is not respecting the Verdrag van Wenen inzake diplomatiek verkeer (Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations). It stated that the baggage was part of an official diplomatic mission and is protected under international law. The ministry added that it cannot comment on the contents of the luggage and that Iran must immediately return the seized material.
