Disagreement among Dutch leaders regarding asylum and healthcare in a televised debate

Dutch political leaders faced each other on Sunday evening in the second RTL election debate, where discussions heated up around asylum policy, healthcare, and the possibilities of forming coalitions. The debate featured Frans Timmermans (GroenLinks-PvdA), Dilan Yeşilgöz (VVD), Rob Jetten (D66), Henry Bontebal (CDA), Joost Eerdmans (JA21), and Jimmy Dijk (SP). Geert Wilders (PVV) declined the invitation, so Dijk participated as his substitute.

Although the atmosphere remained relatively calm, tensions rose particularly between Timmermans and Jetten. Despite ideological differences, most parties showed a rare agreement on limiting labor migration. Regarding asylum policy, everyone agreed on the need to tighten the system, but disagreements remained about how to implement it. Leaders agreed that unrealistic asylum applications should be processed and rejected quickly, ensuring that their submitters are returned to their countries.

Left-wing parties such as GroenLinks-PvdA, D66, and SP have adopted similar positions. Yeshilgöz expressed support for Puntbal's tough stance on asylum, but questioned her party CDA's commitment to enforcing penalties for illegal residency. For his part, Erdmans (JA21) stated that the number of asylum seekers should be reduced first before implementing the refugee distribution law (spreidingswet), but Puntbal responded by saying, "You can't make people disappear," reaffirming his support for continuing the law's implementation.

The debate reached its peak during the healthcare file when Timmermans accused the D66 party of blocking the approval of new cancer treatments. According to reports from the Central Planning Bureau (Centraal Planbureau), the D66, VVD, SGP, CU, Volt, and JA21 parties plan to 'freeze' the basic healthcare package in order to save 7.7 billion euros, which could reduce treatment opportunities. Patient organizations warned that this decision could limit serious treatments to the wealthy only. However, Geiten and Wichers denied this, asserting that they would not block any life-saving treatment.

Timmermans responded angrily, saying: "Mr. Geiten is lying here," to which the latter replied by accusing him of spreading fear, comparing his speech to that of Wilders. However, Timmermans repeated his accusation, saying: "You are lying." During the discussion about reducing the personal contribution to health insurance, Geiten accused Timmermans again of following Wilders' approach, saying: "Why are you taking the Wilders path?" confirming that the D66 party will keep the current amount at 385 euros.

Outside the debate, Jetten ruled out the possibility of forming a coalition with the JA21 party, stating in an interview with De Telegraaf that he could envision a coalition between Timmermans and Wiegman "before D66 would ally with JA21." However, he confirmed that D66 is open to cooperating with "positive forces" from other parties – excluding FVD and PVV – on issues such as education and healthcare.
