Fraud on subsidies in Austria explodes: Minister calls for strict measures

Austria is facing alarming levels of fraud in social benefits, with losses reaching tens of millions of euros annually. Economy Minister Wolfgang Hatzmannsdorfer warned that the exploitation of social assistance undermines trust in the welfare system, especially in Vienna, and called for a strict package of 'justice' to restore confidence.

In 2024 alone, nearly 4,900 cases of benefit fraud were reported, an increase of 9.1% compared to the previous year, with financial damages exceeding 23 million euros. Since the establishment of the Social Benefit Fraud Squad in 2018, fraudulent claims amounting to approximately 135 million euros have been uncovered. Officials believe that the real figures are much higher, considering that the known cases are "just the tip of the iceberg."

More than half of all cases were recorded in Vienna, and the Ministry of the Interior revealed that about 72% of the suspects are not Austrian citizens. Fraud methods have become bolder. In one case, a 31-year-old woman in Vienna secretly sold more than 800 cakes while receiving unemployment benefits. In another case, 43 women continued to receive maternity benefits despite living abroad. Other exploitation cases include receiving assistance while residing for long periods outside the country or while working illegally.

Minister Hatmannsdorfer confirmed that diligent and honest citizens should not be punished for the actions of fraudsters. He emphasized that the welfare state in Austria should reward effort and contribution: "Work must be rewarding, and solidarity is not a one-way street." He explained that every euro stolen from the system means less funding for healthcare, education, and public safety.

To combat fraud, the proposed justice package includes harsher penalties for refusing work, passport checks in AMS to monitor undeclared travel abroad, stricter monitoring of sick leave, and improved data exchange between government agencies. There are also plans to recover stolen funds more efficiently. The ultimate goal, according to the minister, is to protect justice in society—ensuring that those in genuine need receive support, while those who exploit the system face severe consequences.
