Vienna cyclists face huge fines: over 100,000 euros in six months
From April to October 2025, the government traffic department in Vienna intensified its bicycle patrols through 15 targeted field operations, aiming to enhance road safety for cyclists and electric scooter riders. During this period, the police issued 2,490 fines totaling over 100,000 euros, in addition to 1,097 other traffic violations recorded.
The most common violations included running red lights, riding on sidewalks or pedestrian areas, speeding, and using mobile phones while driving. The patrols also conducted 44 speed tests for electric bikes and scooters, recording maximum speeds of up to 89 km/h. Six passengers were suspected of using drugs during these checks.
Authorities reported two emergency cases in which the police intervened in a rescue capacity, highlighting the dangers of reckless riding of bicycles and electric scooters in the city.
The police confirmed that these strict operations and fines aim to raise awareness and encourage safe behavior on the roads of Vienna. This ongoing monitoring is seen as a crucial step to reduce accidents and improve overall traffic safety.
Officials indicated that these measures are part of a broader strategy to protect both cyclists and pedestrians and ensure compliance with traffic laws. Initial results suggest that this intensive monitoring has made passengers more cautious and attentive in crowded urban areas.
