Baby Food Scare: Toxic Rat Venom Detected—Authorities Launch Investigation

Ongoing investigations into a serious case involving an attempt to extort HiPP have revealed disturbing details after a toxic substance was found inside a food product intended for children, causing concern in health and regulatory circles. According to the Austrian news agency APA as part of the follow-up to the case, the results of tests showed that one of the seized baby food containers contained a volume of rat poison amounting to 15 micrograms.

The investigations began after the discovery of a suspicious package in a store, where it was subjected to a thorough laboratory analysis at the request of the public prosecutor's office in Eisenstadt, with the aim of determining the nature of the substance inside it and measuring its quantity. The results confirmed the presence of a toxic substance commonly used in the fight against rodents, which is a class of compounds that affect blood clotting, making it particularly dangerous when ingested, especially by infants.

Although the amount detected is relatively low compared to doses that could be fatal to adults, experts point out that its effect on children can be serious, as it can lead to internal bleeding and serious health complications, especially in the case of pre-existing conditions. Therefore, the competent authorities continue to conduct additional analyses to determine the exact effects of this dose on the child's body, including whether it may pose a life-threatening situation.

The package was sold at a branch of the Spar chain in Eisenstadt, before later being seized in the Schützen am Gebirge area. Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for a second package believed to have left the same store, but it has not yet been found, despite extensive efforts to reach out to families in the area, as well as notifying hospitals, nursing homes and kindergartens in anticipation of any emergency.

The issue is not limited to Austria, as information indicates that similar cases have been detected in other countries, including the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where several modified packaging were found before reaching consumers. These developments prompted the authorities to expand the scope of the investigation, in light of the suspicion of an organized extortion attempt targeting the manufacturer, as the search for those responsible for this act continues.

In light of this incident, retail stores were quick to withdraw the product in question from the markets as a precautionary measure, especially the 190-gram variety, known as "carrots with potatoes", while the authorities called on consumers to be cautious and inspect the packaging carefully, and pay attention to any abnormal signs such as damage to the lid or the presence of an unusual odor.

The case highlights the importance of strict food safety controls, especially those aimed at children, as any manipulation can pose a direct risk to public health. As investigations continue, the priority for the competent authorities remains to protect consumers and to reach those responsible for this incident as soon as possible.
