Controversial ÖGK Savings Program Reduces Services for Patients

The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) is implementing a cost-cutting program that reduces benefits and raises co-payments for several services. Changes take effect in March and May, affecting patient transport, dental prosthetics, orthodontics, and sick pay supplements.

From May, reimbursement for patient transport will only be granted if a medical order proves the patient cannot walk. Transport will no longer be covered simply due to lack of public transport or accompanying persons. Exceptions remain for patients with immunodeficiency or contagious diseases requiring isolation.

Dental prosthetics costs for patients will rise from 25 to 30 percent, while socially exempt individuals will pay 20 percent. Coverage for periodontal treatments is restricted, and criteria for orthodontic benefits have been tightened, removing two diagnoses from eligibility.

Additionally, the family supplement to sick pay, previously paid from the 43rd day onward, has been abolished as of March 1st. Extended sick pay will now require an additional medical assessment between the 63rd and 67th week.

The Green Party criticized the cuts, highlighting a lack of proper communication to insured individuals. Health spokesperson رالف شالماينر condemned the ÖGK for burdening sick patients and families, calling for government funds from the health reform initiative to prevent such reductions.
