A Austrian man faces the death penalty after a stabbing incident in Mecca.

A 21-year-old Austrian man from Lower Austria faces the death penalty in Saudi Arabia after being arrested in March 2024 in connection with a stabbing incident in Mecca. So far, no official trial has begun, and his legal fate remains unclear.

Saudi authorities say that a young man attacked a security officer with a knife near the Grand Mosque, resulting in several injuries. The area where the incident occurred is one of the most guarded locations in the country due to its religious significance.

He was arrested at the scene of the incident and later transferred to a high-security prison near the city of Jeddah, where he remains detained to this day. Authorities confirmed that the presumption of innocence still applies to him, as no judicial ruling has been issued against him.

The judicial proceedings have not gone beyond the preliminary stage, as no formal charges have been filed against him, and no date has been set for the trial to begin. However, the potential charges are extremely serious, as crimes such as attempted murder or terrorism, or what is classified as hostile acts against the state, may be punishable by death under Saudi law.

During a visit to the prison, reports indicated that the detainee asked an employee of the Austrian embassy whether he was really at risk of execution, while affirming that all the charges against him were false and fabricated. For its part, the Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the embassy continues to communicate with him and conducts regular visits to him in prison, in addition to communicating with his family, noting that he has legal representation. The ministry described the case as unprecedented in the record of Austrian consular cases, as no Austrian citizen abroad has faced a threat of execution with such clarity, leaving his fate entirely dependent on the decisions of the Saudi judiciary.
