The reduction of social benefits in Vienna has sparked strong criticism.

The reduction of social benefits in Vienna has sparked strong criticism.

New changes to Vienna’s social assistance system have triggered strong criticism after permanent beneficiaries and families caring for sick or disabled relatives saw their payments reduced at the start of the year.

One affected resident cares full-time for his fourteen-year-old daughter with severe disabilities and for his chronically ill wife. He said he had to quit his job years ago because of constant care duties and relied entirely on social assistance as the family’s main income.

Although he was approved last autumn to receive social assistance instead of unemployment benefits, new rules taking effect in 2026 will reduce his monthly payment by about 200 euros. This equals a loss of around 2,300 euros per year, significantly affecting the household budget.

The amendments include cuts to special payments for long-term recipients and changes to family benefits. Housing support will now be counted when calculating child-related rent subsidies, which is expected to disadvantage families with children who require special care. Despite receiving a disability pension for his wife and a care allowance for his daughter, the man said these amounts are not enough to cover rising living and healthcare costs.

Vienna’s municipal government stated that social assistance levels in the city remain higher than in other Austrian states and declined to comment on individual cases. Opposition parties and social organizations warned that the cuts will mainly harm vulnerable groups, including families, people with disabilities, and children, and could worsen child poverty across the city.
