Black ice paralyzes Germany: deadly accidents across the country
The first major winter storm of the season in Germany has caused widespread chaos, with icy roads and heavy snowfall leading to numerous accidents and fatalities. Authorities warn that hazardous conditions will persist until Monday.
At least three people have died in a multi-vehicle collision on the A93 motorway in Bavaria, involving two trucks and a car. Two others were taken to the hospital after sustaining serious injuries. In Baden-Württemberg, another driver died in an accident on the A81 motorway near Geisingen.
A tragic incident occurred in northern Germany when a 79-year-old cyclist slipped on icy tracks at a railway crossing in Leer, East Frisia, and was struck by a train, resulting in his death at the scene despite the application of emergency brakes.
The winter weather also caused disruptions to air and local transport. Cologne/Bonn Airport halted flight operations for 45 minutes due to black ice, and the city of Würzburg suspended all night bus services, while trams continued to operate. In Hesse and Lower Saxony, dozens of accidents due to icy roads were reported, some of which resulted in injuries.
Temperatures have dropped across the country, with lows reaching -25 degrees Celsius in the Ural Mountains. Authorities warn of continued hazardous conditions, with more snowfall and freezing rain expected, increasing the risk of black ice on roads, especially in the southeastern areas and mountainous regions.
