The ice has broken! Several large-scale rescue operations in Vienna
A man in Vienna miraculously survived on Friday after attempting to cross the frozen New Danube River, only to fall into the cold waters after the thin ice broke beneath his feet. Some passersby quickly intervened using a life buoy to rescue him.
The professional fire brigade in Vienna confirmed that the man suffered from severe hypothermia and was given first aid immediately before being transported to rescue services. It is likely that the quick intervention prevented a fatal disaster.
The next day, a similar incident occurred near the U6 station "Neue Donau", where a father and his son also fell into the water after the ice broke. Bystanders intervened again with rescue floats while the fire crews secured the area.
The city of Vienna warns that any natural ice surface is unsafe for public access. Hidden dangers include groundwater and currents, fluctuating water levels, and weak ice under snow or near bridges and pillars. Even ice that appears solid can break suddenly.
Falling into frozen water can lead to cold shock, panic, and rapid exhaustion, making every second critical. Authorities advise against attempting a rescue without proper equipment and recommend using approved skating rinks, such as the Vienna Ice Skating Club (District 3), the Engleman Ski Facility (District 17), or Eisring Süd in Favoriten.
