VVD and D66 websites among thousands of sites affected by the global internet outage
A major outage in Cloudflare's service on Tuesday rendered many websites around the world inaccessible, including Dutch party sites and major global platforms. Visitors were facing error messages due to a significant failure in Cloudflare's internal network.
In the Netherlands, the websites of VVD (People's Party for Freedom and Democracy), D66 (Democrats 66), CDA (Christian Democratic Appeal), NH Nieuws, AT5, Omroep Brabant, Alzheimer Nederland, and the Dutch Cancer Society KWF were affected. International services such as X, X Pro, Discord, ChatGPT, and several major e-commerce sites also experienced disruptions.
Global monitoring platforms reported a sharp increase in online outages, particularly among companies relying on Cloudflare's content delivery network to ensure stability and speed. When attempting to access the affected sites, users encountered messages indicating an internal error in the Cloudflare system.
The problem began around the same time that Cloudflare was preparing for maintenance work at a data center in Santiago, Chile, although it remains unclear whether there is a connection between the two events. Cloudflare stated that it is investigating a "problem affecting many users."
In addition to access issues, the outage created a temporary security vulnerability. Many organizations rely on Cloudflare to prevent DDoS attacks, and without protection, sites may become more susceptible to malicious traffic until service is fully restored.
