The Dutch Foreign Minister describes the American tariffs on European countries as a 'silly proposal'.

Dutch Acting Foreign Minister David van Wil criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose import tariffs on eight European countries, including the Netherlands, calling it "blackmail" and "a ridiculous proposal."

Trump announced that starting February 1, the United States will impose a 10% tariff on products from the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Finland, and Denmark. If Greenland is not transferred to the United States, the tariffs will increase to 25% on June 1.

The president claimed that Greenland is essential for American national security, pointing to the interest of Russia and China in the Arctic region. Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Prime Minister of Greenland confirmed that the island does not intend to become part of the United States.

Van Wil said to WNL: "This is blackmail. It's a ridiculous proposal. Allies do not treat each other this way. In the next two weeks, everything must be done to remove this proposal from the table. If that doesn't happen, all options remain open. I am not very happy about this."

European countries have sent military reconnaissance units to Greenland in preparation for maneuvers. Van Wyl confirmed that these deployments were coordinated with the Americans at various levels, highlighting ongoing cooperation despite the tariff dispute.
