The Russian threats against Austria are not a coincidence

Austria has become the focus of Russian discourse, with senior officials warning that recent threats are part of Moscow's strategy in the hybrid war. According to Arnold Kammel, the Secretary General of the Austrian Ministry of Defense, the verbal attacks from Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, are not a coincidence, but a calculated step.

Arnold Kamel said to Die Presse in its Saturday edition: "Russia is testing our reactions." He added that such hostile statements aim not only to provoke outside the country but also to attract local support in Russia.

The assessments of the Ministry of Defense show how the Kremlin uses verbal escalation as a political tool. Issuing threats sends a message of dissatisfaction with European positions, while simultaneously bolstering domestic support in Russia.

The timing of these threats is particularly significant, as it came after political discussions in Austria regarding neutrality and security policy. At the European Forum in Alpbach, Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS) stated that Europe "cannot be neutral in the face of such a threat" amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

While Beate Meinl-Reisinger called for the establishment of a European army, she clarified that this does not mean joining NATO. The discussion reflects Austria's delicate situation, as it seeks to balance its traditional neutrality with the increasing security challenges posed by Russia's aggression.
